I don't feel particularly patriotic, because I am not sure which country to be patriotic too. 
In terms of products and services I support the Proudly South African campaign - I think taking pride in many of the products that come out of this country is necessary for economic growth.
I found myself nodding at many parts of your argument. And yes, mindless extreme patriotism is nauseating eg. USA. 
My understanding of being proud of your nationality is accepting it like you would any part of yourself, without shame. Yes we cannot be responsible for its history or actions, but nationality is part of us. I am not proud of every man or totally defined by being male, but I am proud to be a male. As I am with race, sexuality etc. We are all individuals, but each of these fragments do contribute (even if just a little bit) to us being who we are.
I totally agree with you that the idea of blanket all-encompassing nationality, that trumps all forms of personal identity is ridiculous.</description>
